Magnitude 4.6 earthquake rattles Victoria overnight

Thousands of Victorians were startled by tremors early this morning as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake rattled part of the state.

The quake hit 127km east of Melbourne, near Rawson, at about 1.32am.

It was recorded at a depth of 7km.

The tremors were felt by about 7000 people, according to Geoscience Australia, including in Melbourne.

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake has struck east of Melbourne.

Among them was actor and comedian Magda Szubanksi, who wrote "Earthquake again Melbourne peeps" on social media.

Victoria has been hit by several quakes recently, including three in the space of one week in May.
