Four million Australians' data at risk in Medibank hack

Four million Australians are at risk of having their private medial records exposed after the Medibank data hack, it has been revealed.

The Australian Federal Police are investigating the cyber-attack after the purported criminals sent a ransom demand earlier this week.

It's claimed 200 gigabytes of data was stolen.

"We believe (the data) has come from our ahm and international student systems," Medibank said in a statement.

"That data includes first names and surnames, addresses, dates of birth, Medicare numbers, policy numbers, phone numbers and some claims data.

"Claims data includes the location of where a customer received medical services, and codes relating to their diagnosis and procedures."

Home affairs minister Clare O'Neil addresses Medibank hack.

The hackers sent Medibank a sample of 100 policies that Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil confirmed were legitimate.

O'Neil warned the initial sample was just a look at how much data may have been stolen in the cyber attack.

"It tells us something about what a broader theft of data may look like in Medibank and it includes a very broad scope of information," she said yesterday.
