Do I get a public holiday in October?

If you have ever wondered how to make the most of your annual leave, planning holidays around Australia's public holidays can maximise your time off.

Australians recently gained an extra public holiday to morn the death of Queen Elizabeth II, which gave Victoria a four day weekend as it coincided with the Grand Final Friday holiday.

In October, five states will get a public holiday but many will also miss out.

Will I get a public holiday in October?

If you live in Victoria, WA or the NT, no. There are no scheduled public holidays for those states in October.

If you live in any other state and some parts of Tasmania, yes you do.

On Monday October 3, ACT, NSW and SA have a public holiday for Labour Day.

It's commonly known as the "October long weekend" in those states.

Queensland will also have a public holiday on October 3, but it will be for the King or Queen's Birthday.

The holiday in Queensland is officially titled Birthday of the Sovereign and is more informally known as the Queen's Birthday holiday.

Queensland is yet to announce if there will be any official change to the name of the public holiday, since the death of the Queen.

Tasmania has a variety of local show public holidays across different regions in the state, which are as follows.

Thursday October 6: Royal Launceston Show

Friday October 14: Flinders Island Show

Thursday October 20: Royal Hobart Show
