A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being seriously beaten in the NSW Lower Hunter region overnight.
At about 10.40pm on Wednesday, emergency services were called to Anne Street, East Maitland, after reports that a man was seen lying in the middle of the road.
When police arrived, they found a 51-year-old man had been badly bashed, with several wounds to his head, face and back.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital.
Police have established a crime scene and are now trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
