South Australia puts up hard border to NSW after outbreaks

South Australia will reimpose its hard border restrictions with NSW from midnight tonight following an increase in coronavirus clusters linked to Greater Sydney.

Premier Steven Marshall made the announcement this morning as NSW Health reported 10 new cases in the state today, with five linked to the original Avalon cluster.

Three are linked to a cluster in Sydney's inner west, which NSW Health says is an area of major concern.

From midnight - 12.01am on January 1 - travellers from NSW will be banned from entering South Australia, with a few exceptions.

"This morning we received advice which would suggest we need to strengthen our border restrictions from NSW," Mr Marshall said.

"From day one we have listened to the health experts and we have acted promptly to keep the people of South Australia safe and to keep our economy strong and we will continue to do this into the future."

Those exemptions include returning SA residents, those who are permanently relocating to the state, or those who are classified as essential workers.

Border passes will still be required and 14-day self-isolation will be enforced.

A buffer zone of 100km will be imposed for people living in border towns.

There have been no changes made to the Victorian border despite three new cases being recorded in the state overnight.

NSW COVID-19 update

NSW recorded 10 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, Premier Gladys Berejiklian revealed.

Ms Berejikilan said five of the cases were linked to the Avalon cluster on Sydney's northern beaches, and three were linked to the Croydon cluster in the city's inner-west.

One case was linked to the previously-known transport worker cluster.

The source of the remaining case remains under investigation, Ms Berejiklian said, although it may be an old case.

The premier said almost 28,000 people across the state were tested during the previous 24 hours, an increase on previous days.
