Melburnians return to offices as universal QR code system launched

Melburnians are set to return to offices today as the Victorian Government launches its new contact tracing app that will provide a universal QR code check-in for businesses.

From today, 25 per cent of non-essential workers will be permitted to go back to the office under one of the final steps in creating a COVID-normal across the city.

Tram capacity has been boosted in the CBD to allow for social distancing, with masks still mandatory on public transport as well as in offices, despite calls for them to be relaxed inside workplaces.

While Melburnians are permitted to return to offices, city streets remained quiet today with majority of workers still opting to work from home for a few more weeks or until the new year.

For workers who do return, a number of workplaces will be requesting each person who attends the site for more than 15 minutes to sign in using a QR code system for contact tracing purposes.

The Victorian Government's newly launched QR Code Service can be used by businesses and venues to keep records of visitors, however a number of workplaces have already set up their own system.

Visitors would need to scan the QR code using their smartphone camera and fill out their personal details.

QR codes for smaller hospitality venues with a density limit of one person for every two square metres are now mandatory.

The return to work plan is aimed at bringing more foot traffic to the CBD to revive the city's battered hospitality sector.

"Business owners across the state can be sure that our QR Code Service is easy, free and safe to use," Government Services Minister Danny Pearson said.

Victoria recorded zero new coronavirus cases and one new death today.
