Pair charged with ramming police car, sparking high-speed chase

A man and woman are due in court today facing a string of charges after allegedly ramming a police car in a stolen vehicle, sparking a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Wollongong, south of Sydney, yesterday afternoon.

The pursuit began when a marked highway patrol car was rammed by a Holden Commodore on Flinders Street about 2.50pm.

Footage of the incident obtained by 9News shows the highway patrol vehicle attempting to cut off the black sedan as it enters a roundabout on Flinders Street.

The sedan then appears to ram into the rear of a white ute and then crashes into the police car, before reversing onto the footpath and knocking over a street sign.

It then mounts the median strip before taking off down the wrong side of the road.

The two police officers inside the patrol car were unharmed, but their vehicle was badly damaged.

Another highway patrol vehicle gave chase down Flinders Street and into Montague Street, but was forced to call off the pursuit due to safety concerns.

A short time later, the Commodore was found abandoned in Ocean Park, Woonona, about 10 kilometres to the north, where three people were spotted allegedly running from the scene.

PolAir, the Dog Unit and extra officers were called in to set up a perimeter and search for the pair from the ground and air.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on Franklin Avenue in Bulli and a 30-year-old woman was arrested on nearby Bulli Beach.

They were taken to Wollongong Police Station, where the man was charged with 10 offences including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving a stolen car, having a misleading number plate, using a weapon to avoid arrest and possessing goods believed to be stolen.

The woman was charged with being a passenger in a stolen vehicle.

Both were refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today.
